EmailIt all started for me at Bristol train station. I arrived at around 1.30pm and made some phone calls to find out where to meet the others (Bristol is pretty big and I wouldn't know where I was going). Bellatrix told me I had to wait 20 minutes before she was to meet me, accompanied by the legend himself, YasSon. Whilst waiting I sat and beatboxed to myself, starting off the long day alone. I got several glances as I started making vocal cut sounds pretty loudly, and then kicked off some drum and bass. I finally decided to give my mouth a rest and took a seat next to a random old dude who started talking about the history of Bristol. With my new knowledge of Bristol in mind I finally saw a familiar figure walking towards me; it was YasSon! All I saw at first was his fairly large red mohawk, then the small figure of Bellatrix walking beside him.
After several more phone calls we found out that Archangel was going to be a bit late (damn trains!) and White Noise was near, so we decided to take a walk into Bristol centre and take a seat in a bar close by.
After chatting with my newfound duo for a while we received phone calls from White Noise, Archangel, BeatMuppet and Boris FX saying that they had arrived. Bellatrix went and met White Noise, BeatMuppet and Archangel. I felt honored to be having a beer with these HUMANBEATBOX.COM legends. The arrival of the posse was marked my BeatMuppet's grand, and certainly memorable, entrance (jumping in the air and landing in a seating position on the floor). A few beers and laughs later we made our merry way to meet Boris. This is when the journey begins.
The first jam of the evening went to Dainjamouth, Archangel and Boris FX, who jammed on the way to The Croft as Bellatrix and Co went back to hers to shed some luggage. After walking past shooting scenes and lots of takeaways (by this time I was starving), we finally arrived at The Croft!!!
The place looked pretty dead when we arrived, but I could see several people sitting in the corner. And there they were; Hobbit with a roll of gaffer tape, TyTe with a pint of Guinness, Bevis with a pint of cider and Oni with a guitar; all jamming with their hand held instruments!! There were things that I never realized about these guys - I never thought TyTe would be a Guinness drinker, I never knew that Hobbit was actually small, or that Bevis was such a cider lover, and how ginger Oni is!!! (Only messing bud)
Marv-ill and EEZY
At this time it was time for the soundcheck, this is when I met vigilante and friends, compared to him on the forums he is so quiet in real life!!! Me and Boris took the mics and used our most powerful beats to get the sound engineer sorted but me and Boris got carried away and ended up jamming for half an hour until being stopped by Hobbit, boooo!!
As more and more beatboxers and listeners piled in the more drunk bevis was getting :p and the more and more everyone wanted to get on stage, especially Boris who was on the mic all the time, jamming with Selector (and his sexy Michael Jackson Dancing) and Marv-ill (with his sexy Monkey beatboxing)and me (just sexiness :p).
At this time we decided to give our mouths a rest for later on and get a drink and have a chat and mini jam outside, just getting into it we then hear whistles and some screaming, this was the signal for the start of the night, TyTe's Workshop!!
TyTe’s Workshop
BeatMuppet and Jen
We all stood round in a circle around TyTe while he went on to teach us how to his trademark Click Rolls, Vocal Echo, Dalek impression, Scooby Doo Impression, Vocal Scratching and various other techniques. This was also contributed by other fellow beatboxers giving tips on advanced material. He then went on to teaching a non beatboxer the basics, who actually sounded pretty good at the end of it!! Good ol' TyTe!! Doing this then warmed up the sound engineer so we then moved onto the next part, the First Showcase.
Showcase 1: BeatMuppet (Guitar and Beatbox) and Jen (Vocals)
This showed BeatMuppet's beatbox talent the most from the whole night, to beatbox and play the guitar at the same time is pretty difficult and BM showed this off with ease as they played 3 songs with a fantastic singer.
Showcase 2: Shlomo
This is probably the most memorable part of the night for every beatboxer there, and for Shlomo to say this was his older set being as good as it is, it's made me certain to see his new set!! He brought his little friend the loop pedal (which is the older one, he just brought a brand new one which is better) and started off with some beatboxing first of all. He then moved onto showing us how this pedal worked, he first set out a rhythm then added a sick, head nodder of a bassline and created the melody and harmonies around it. This was incredible enough to see one man creating such a vibe and tune! He then he moved onto the most amazing Drum and Bass sets which blew the crowd away, just listening to this gave me goosebumps, as trying to film it on my phone (which didn't save grrrr!) The build up to it was unbelievable!! Kept the crowd buzzing for ages and was the most talked about set for the whole night!
