I heard about the Becks Vier night at the Vibe Bar on Bricklane, London through www.humanbeatbox.com. Winning two free tickets, I decided to take my friend Gez. She had once made me a mix tape with Biz Markie, Doug E Fresh and The Fat Boys on, so I figured she'd love it.
I had no idea what it would be like really, the emails were all pretty vague. I knew Shlomo and the Vocal Orchestra would be there and that it was at the Vibe Bar, but I didn't know much else. I'd already seen Shlomo and the Vocal Orchestra at the Southbank Centre. Shlomo is currently running a concert series called Music through unconventional means. I saw the one he did with Natalie Williams and it was rad so I was pretty stoked about seeing the Vocal Orchestra again.
We got there mega early, walked into this 5 star hotel-like lobby and asked if we were on the guest list. She crossed our names off and we were given free drinks vouchers, Becks of course. Used the free cloak room and went into the bar area. They were still setting up which was a bit awkward, so we got a stamp and went to RoughTrade round the corner. After a bit we came back and the Bar looked so good! We were REALLY under dressed, everybody was in a suit! But the photographer seemed to like that and got pictures of us both with our Becks Vier bottle labels facing to the lens. Then the free food came round! All this free stuff was amazing! We waited a little for a man to show us the new Becks Vier advert, with Biz Markie in. It was sick!
Then Shlomo and the Vocal Orchestra came on. Shlomo seems to have a presence that can hype any crowd! The Vocal Orchestra was made up of Shlomo, Spit F'ya, Mc Zani (Who I'd seen at the London Beatbox championship semi finals the previous week and he blew me away!), Natalie Williams and Vula. I was so excited about hearing Natalie Williams again, her voice is so powerful. Shlomo did a set first which never gets old no matter how often i hear it!
I loved over hearing people turning to there friends and saying 'That can't be real!'...'It is! Have you heard of Beardyman?!'. The crowd forgetting at times he was beatboxing, would start dancing like Shlomo was no longer a Beatboxer but a DJ. Then Shlomo bought out his secret weapon, his black clothed box, his rediculous loop station! I love hearing him do live sets with this thing! The crowd allready totally confused and lost at the sight of one person making all this noise couldn't wait for him to get past his '1, 2, 3 A, B, C' loop. As soon as Shlomo had layed down all the parts for '3 is the magic number by De La Soul' everybody was making so much noise you could barely hear his Beatbox.
After this the Vocal Orchestra came out, the crowd were so excited. 'That guy did all that! Shit! What are they all going to do?!'...'I don't know! But i need another Beer!'. I don't know what it is about Beatboxing that people seem to take to so well, but I don't know any of gigs I've been to where people get so on side with the performer as at a Beatbox gig. The Vocal Orchestras set was flawless, jaw dropping and seemed to have tightened since I last saw them. They understood each others' movements and sounds perfectly and knew just how to compliment the others in the group. The crowd were going nuts, the free food and drinks weren't getting touched, it was ALL about Shlomo and the Vocal Orchestra.
After they had finished I overheard one man say 'They are right, that was more than beatboxing, they are a Vocal Orchestra.' And that is so true!
