King of The Jam 2002A

On Saturday 6th July, the first ever King of The Jam took place in London, UK. The event was organised and hosted by SPLINTERPRODUCTS and BEATBOXING.CO.UK, and the aim was to get members of the site together in the real world, to beatbox and be merry. And what a great day it was - definitely the first of many.

We all met up in Trafalgar Sqaure, and from there went to St James's Park to begin jamming. There were 4 beatboxers on the day: A-Plus, Shlomo, Mowgli and Arro (who came all the way from Leeds!). Getting lost, being ill and being in different countries meant quite a few others couldn't make it! Mark from SPLINTERPRODUCTS filmed the whole thing, and Brynley provided some rhymes later on. Arro also delivered some quality freestyles and vocal scratching. Shlomo entertained us with his trance and d&b rhythms, and Mowgli with his spontaneous beats and superior click rolls.

Onlookers watch in amazement at the beatbox jamming in St James's Park

We spent most of the day in St James's park, beatboxing, talking and chilling out in the sunshine. A crowd built up as the jamming ensued, and some ravers on a come-down from the night before were completely in awe of the proceedings. This had to be the highlight of the day! We also briefly stopped off at Leicester Square, and despite getting a small crowd going, our non-amplified beats were drowned out by the street musicians. Next time we will be there with a full-on PA and big hats for all the cash!

Brynley accepts his prize for the Nice Sandwich Award

It wasn't called King of The Jam for no reason. Prizes for the various catagories were in the form of fine pots of Raspberry Jam, and the winners (as selected by Mark SPLINTER) were as follows:

King of the Jam

~aRRO~ - for doing everything at the same time, and coming all the way from Leeds

Team Jam Playa

Mowgli - for starting every spontaneous jam all day, and going first

Jam Innovator

Shlomo - for breaking new audiences with his outstanding tranceboxing

Jam Banner Supremo

A-Plus - for A-grade typography and banner/shirt combo

Nice Sandwich Award

Brynley SPLINTER - for streaky bacon, rocket and parmesan on malt

MP3 Virtual Jam Winner

VPI - as chosen by Killa Kela, "Big shouts to all the peeps involved, but VPI wins it hands down, especially for his hi-hat control. Also shouts for Poizunus Mynd's scratching." [click to hear audio clips and vote].

Nice sandwich

So everyone got an award (and the ingredient to make a tasty sandwich), apart from Mark SPLINTER who was actually the prize giver. However, massive props are in order for Mark, for setting this whole thing up and making a great visual and audio record of the day, that will no doubt become legendary and appear on many a documentary.
