Selector checks out the UMF Human Beatbox Workshop...

Beatology

After acquiring my ticket to a free human beatbox tutorial, and seeing Sam and Mark leave after filming for Top of the Pops, I entered a cosy private area, surrounded by seats, and an OHP in the corner. The room was dominated by two huge speakers, connected up to several Shure SM58 microphones, some of which were lying in the corner, and the remaining three in the hands of Tyte, Shlomo and Petebox!

Shlo and TyTe
After introducing myself to Tyte, I took a seat and watched as a brilliant workshop/history lesson of beatboxing unfolded. The three took it in turns to explain and demonstrate. To begin with, we were told how beatboxing first started: with all the original pioneers; Biz Markie, the Fat boys etc. Next we were introduced to some basic beats and Petebox gave precise directions on how the noises should be created.

The PETEBOX
We were shown a rhythm on the OHP which used these beats, and everyone had a go. (the first simple 3 noises; classic kick, snare and hi-hats). This was followed by members of the audience battling, and a totally mindblowing skit by Tyte, Shlo and Petebox. It seemed to have a drum and bass feel, with shlo providing the main beat, Tyte beating and making insane noises over the top, and Petebox providing some of the weirdest and craziest vocal bass I've ever heard. Bear in mind, it was very hard to see who was doing what! For me, each beatboxer had a specific talent. Tyte's simply had to be the vocal echo, Shlomo's the vocal scratching, and I was especially impressed by Petebox's all-round ability to impersonate voice and beats - plus I later discovered he could do fast style drum and bass style MCing, in a beat!!

Sam and Mark from CBBC's TOTP Saturday with Shlo
Overall a very enjoyable 40 minutes, and I congratulate them all on an outstanding workshop.
