Telefunken M80 Microphone Review

The Telefunken M80 is undoubtedly the best microphone built for travelers and beatboxers who are touring from venue to venue. Why? Well, this microphone has a built-in transformer that matches impedance, so you’re going to get the same high-quality performance across multiple sound systems and in the harshest conditions.

Let’s dig deeper into what this all means.

The Design

The Telefunken M80 is beautifully branded with the stunning metallic Telefunken logo on the body. This microphone also champions a shiny chrome grill, which looks and feels very similar to the e945A, and feels very comfortable on the hand, especially due to its black powder coat. But another huge reason why musicians choose the Telefunken M80 is the customizability of the microphone.

On the Telefunken website, you can order the M80 in almost every color imaginable: purple, pink, gold, wood (our favorite) - you name it!

What are the specifications?

Here’s what you’ll get right out of the box.

  • Price: $249 - $299 MSRP
  • Frequency Response: 50Hz - 18000kHz
  • Polar Pattern: Supercardioid
  • Impedance: 325 ohms Sensitivity: 1.54 mV/Pa
  • Weight: 387grams, 13.65 ounces
  • Product Dimensions: 185 mm length x 48 mm Diameter

The Sound

The M80 has an impressive frequency response, ranging from 50Hz to 18,000, which beats out most similar microphones in this price range. It’s also a supercardioid with an impedance of 325 ohms. While the stats are not as impressive as its Sennheiser and Shure counterparts, the built-in transformer ensures an extremely high quality of sound. You’re guaranteed consistently balanced tones, making this a super reliable and versatile microphone.

The Verdict

This microphone sits at a higher price range than most other microphones with similar, if not better specifications. While we do love the built-in transformer, we will have to side with the E945 for beatboxing purposes as the M80 is a little pricier with a slightly muddier low-tonal range. However, this microphone is perfect if you’re just looking for consistency, and also a wide variety of design options. It’s customizable, feels awesome, and frankly champions a killer sound.
