I absolutely agree with D-Koy, that’s the same beat I used when I first tried getting faster. If you’re like me, and struggle to read notation, think of it as:

Boots and cats – tika tika – boots cats


After mastering that beat, add more tks (tikatikas) into it, and eventually add some pehK or tkK. Basically, learn the basic beat, get good at it, and then build it up.


One thing to remember though, is that it is hugely important to be CLEAN. I’d rather hear a perfectly executed, clean beat at 120 BPM than the same beat at 160, but sloppier. If you’re clean, even your most basic beats (think back to boots and cats) will sound really good.
