Cardioid

Cardioid is a way of describing where a microphone picks up sound - its responsiveness from the front, sides and rear. This responsiveness can be drawn as a 'polar pattern'. Cardioid microphones pick up sound from the front of a microphone, a little from the sides and none from the rear. This makes cardioid microphones a good choice for stage use. e.g. Shure SM58.
